User profile forms
2 min read
The kind User profile shows the fields of one or more field groups with a user location and saves them for the logged-in user. Use it for member areas: a phone number, a bio, preferences, a company name.
Set it up
- Create a field group whose location rules target users (for example User role is Subscriber, or User form is Your profile). See Location rules. The group needs at least one location rule.
- Add form, choose The form › User profile.
- Tick the field groups in Fields. The User profile card only says: "Logged-in users edit their own field values. Visitors who are not logged in see a login link."
- Optionally limit the form in Who can submit: Every logged-in user (default) or Users with a capability. A profile form is for logged-in users whichever you pick.
- Save and put the shortcode
[wpmcf_form key="my_profile"]or the WPM Form block on a page.
What visitors see
- Not logged in: "Please log in to use this form." and a Log in link that returns to the page.
- Logged in: the form, filled with their current values; the button reads Update profile.
- After saving: "Your profile has been updated." (or your own Success message) above the form, which stays on the page.
What is saved, and for whom
- Only the current user's own values are saved. The user is always taken from the login session; a different user ID sent with the form is ignored.
- The form saves only custom field values of the chosen groups. WordPress's own profile data (name, email address, password, role) is not part of it. Use WordPress's profile screen, or your membership plugin, for those.
- Fields the form cannot show (see the overview) keep their stored value.
- A group's location rules are not checked when the form shows it: if you tick a group whose rule says User role is Subscriber, an editor who opens the form sees and can save those fields too. Limit the audience with Who can submit and with where you place the form.
- An optional email tells you that the form was used; its link opens that user's edit screen.
Limits
- A user edits only themselves. There is no form that edits another user.
- If none of the ticked groups can show a field, the form says (to administrators) "This form has no fields it can show. Add field groups with usable fields to it."
