Tasks
5 min read
A task is the recipe for a set of generated pages. You create and edit tasks on the Programmatic SEO screen.
The overview
The overview lists your tasks as cards in Page tasks, and your data tables in Data tables. Above them a usage bar shows Pages (used / limit, for example 4,821 / 5,000, with a progress bar) and Tasks (used / limit) for your plan, with the plan name and Need more pages?.
Each task card shows:
- the task name, a status badge and the URL pattern, for example
/guides/{{ pseo.src.cities.name }} - the number of live pages
- the last run: "Last run 2 hours ago: 120 created, 3 updated, 0 removed." or, while running, "Running: 40 created, 0 updated so far…". If a run left rows without a live page it adds one sentence per reason: "%s row skipped: another generated page uses its URL.", "%s page offline: WordPress content uses its URL." and "%s page waits for the page limit."
- buttons Pages, Edit, Run now or Pause, and Delete
Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
Generating | A run is in progress. The card updates every few seconds. |
Scheduled | The task has finished and runs again on its schedule or when its data changes. |
Waiting | The task finished a run but has a notice, for example a daily or plan limit; it continues later. |
Up to date | A one-time task finished. |
Paused | The task does not run until you click Run now. |
Failed | The task stopped after repeated errors; the card shows the error. Run now tries again. |
Delete asks "Delete this task?" and warns "Its 120 pages will stop working immediately. This cannot be undone." Deleting a task deletes its generated pages, its AI values and its AI task. Pages that were already converted to posts stay as posts and their old URLs keep redirecting.
Create a task
Click New task (or Create a task when there are none). The editor opens with the intro "A task turns rows of data into pages built from one template." It is one long page of steps; each step is a card that opens when you click its title and shows a summary when closed.
Template
Option | What it does |
|---|---|
Task name | "Only shown in the admin." (for example "City landing pages"). Up to 100 characters. |
Pages behave like | The kind of content every generated page represents. Any public post type except attachments: Page, Post or a custom post type. "Themes and SEO plugins treat each generated page like a single item of this type." |
Page template | "A normal page whose design and content every generated page reuses. Put {{ variables }} where the data belongs." Choose an existing item of the same post type, use Edit template ↗ to open it, or New template to create a draft ("Template title, e.g. City page template" then Create draft; a message says "Template created as a draft. Open it to design the page."). |
The template must be of the same post type as Pages behave like ("The page template must be of the same post type as the pages."). If the template is password protected, or a draft or private, the editor shows a warning (the task still saves): its content is shown on every generated page whatever its own visibility. See Templates and field values.

Sync and limits
Keep pages in sync (schedule, Business), Update pages when the data changes, New pages per day and, under Advanced settings, Rows per batch. Details: Running and scheduling.
Save, run, and what changes when
The header has up to three buttons:
Button | What it does |
|---|---|
View 120 pages | Opens the task's pages list (only for a saved task). |
Save | Saves the task. Does not start a run. Disabled until you change something on a saved task. |
Save and generate pages (new task) / Save and run now (saved task) | Saves and starts a run in the background. |
A new task saved with Save stays Paused with no pages. A message confirms "Task saved." or, after a run was started, "Saved. Pages are being generated in the background." If something is wrong, a notice Not saved explains it ("Choose the page template.", "Choose at least two data sources to combine.", "Choose the data source.", "Enter the URL pattern, usually a variable such as the name column.").
A leave-page guard warns about unsaved changes.
Which settings need a run to reach existing pages?
Setting | When it takes effect |
|---|---|
URL pattern, parent path, title | At the next run (pages are updated, old URLs redirect) |
Quality rules, Show pages in search results (index/follow) | At the next run (the page's indexing is stored when it is generated) |
Which rows (source, filters, mode) | At the next run (a different set of sources resets the pages first) |
SEO title, meta description, share image, canonical choice, title format, structured data, breadcrumbs, sitemap switches | Immediately: they are computed every time a page is shown |
Template content | Immediately: pages render the template on each visit |
AI brief | When AI runs next |
Run counters and the run log (the last 20 runs) are stored with the task; you can read them in the task's log through the REST API (GET /wp-json/wpmcf/v1/pseo/tasks/{id}/logs) or, in short form, from wp wpmcf tasks list (WP-CLI).
Task limit
Your plan allows 5 (Pro), 50 (Business) or unlimited (Agency) tasks. Creating one more shows "Your plan allows 5 tasks. Upgrade to add more." The quick-start sample task counts too.
