Post types: General and Labels tabs
3 min read
These two tabs appear in the post type editor when Advanced settings is on. See Custom post types for how to open the editor.
General tab
Description
A free text description of the type. WordPress stores it with the type and some themes and plugins show it. It is not displayed anywhere on your site by default. Default: empty.
Supports
Supports decides which editor features and meta boxes the type has. Tick the ones you need:
Option | Adds |
|---|---|
| The title field. |
| The main content editor (block editor). |
| An author selector. |
| The featured image box. |
| The excerpt box. |
| Trackbacks and pingbacks settings. |
| The classic "Custom Fields" meta box (WordPress's own post meta, not Mass Custom Fields fields). |
| Comments and the discussion box. |
| Saves revisions of each change. |
| Post formats selector. |
| Menu order and, for hierarchical types, the parent and template selectors. |
Default: title and editor. If you untick everything and save, the plugin stores title and editor again, because a type with no support at all cannot be edited.
You do not need custom-fields to use Mass Custom Fields field groups. Field groups appear through their own location rules.
Additional supports (comma-separated)
For features added by other plugins or themes, for example my-feature. Each entry is lowercased and spaces become hyphens. Unknown names are stored as is and simply passed to WordPress.
Taxonomies
A list of every taxonomy that has an admin screen, shown as "Label (key)". Tick a taxonomy to attach it to this post type. A taxonomy created in Mass Custom Fields also lists its post types in its own editor; the link is the same either way, see Taxonomies.
Saving a type with a taxonomy that does not exist fails with Taxonomy "key" does not exist.
Labels tab
Labels are the words WordPress shows around your type: "Add New Book", "No books found.", "All Books". By default they are built for you from the Plural label and Singular label in the Basics section, so you only need this tab to change wording.
The tab shows 34 fields, one per WordPress label key (name, singular_name, menu_name, add_new_item, not_found, all_items and so on). The grey placeholder inside each field is the label WordPress will use right now.
Action | Result |
|---|---|
Leave a field empty | The generated default is used (and updates when you rename the type). |
Type a value | That text replaces the default for this label only. |
Regenerate from labels | Fills every field with the current defaults. They are then stored as overrides, so renaming the plural or singular label later will not change them. |
Clear overrides | Empties all fields, returning to generated defaults. |
Defaults follow the pattern shown in the placeholders, for example with "Books" and "Book":
Key | Default |
|---|---|
| Add New Book |
| Edit Book |
| All Books |
| Search Books |
| No books found. |
| No books found in Trash. |
| Book Featured Image (for a hierarchical type: Book Cover Image) |
| Book published. |
Only non-empty values are saved. Labels are text only; HTML is removed.
